Speaking of Portland…what do Buttheads think of the sex scandal surrounding Portland’s new gay mayor, Sam Adams, who after denying it during his campaign, now admits he had a brief sexual relationship with a 17-year-old intern named Beau Breedlove (above, probably not on a beach in Oregon)? Their flirtation didn’t become physical until after the ridiculously hot Breedlove turned 18, which means the sex wasn’t illegal, but now Portland’s divided over whether Adams should resign.

When we were 17 we probably would have jumped at the chance to hook up with a hot older politician, and Breedlove has said, “I knew what I was doing.” In his Op-Ed column for the New York Times today, Timothy Egan writes in response, “Nobody at age 17 knows what they are doing, which is why they should never be having sex with middle-aged men, especially those in powerful positions.” What do you think, Buttheads? Are calls for Adams to resign homophobic? Or does the fact that Adams lied about the relationship during the campaign mean he’s too untrustworthy to hold public office regardless of what he’s done?

What about Glenn Comuntzis???????????

I volunteered for what was originally planned to be Mayor Adams’ Inaugural Ball in Downtown Portland…the event was held in part as a benefit to the Q Center, a community organized queer resource center in close-in SE Portland. Since Mayor Adams has come out with the truth surrounding this story, the event was renamed “Q Center’s Winter Gala”. Individuals paying up to $175 for VIP treatment to an event largely in support of the mayor should have been disappointed that Mayor Adams made only a brief appearance and spoke only for a moment.
I support man-boy love, it helped me to mature myself more rapidly at a young age…advancing myself to the already experienced stages heterosexuals in my grade had encountered. Although there was obvious room for advancement, my communication and sexual skills acquired through that relationship thoroughly aided in my first relationships. Who cares if he was 17? He probably wouldn’t have gotten into office if he didn’t lie about it. Most politicians would have continued to lie through his term until the end if not come out with the truth at all. The drama surrounding this situation came largely in part of media sources in Portland and Breedlove’s willingness to draw public attention to this matter.
A few days before Sam Adams’ public announcement to stay in office and work his ass off, there was a public demonstration and rally at City Hall downtown. It seemed as if hundreds of people were crowded on City Hall’s front block. Individuals held signs, made out, chanted “Get Back to Work!”, “Homophobes have got to go!”, “Anal Sex”, “Group Sex” [the more obscene chants originated courtesy of the hate/Bible-preaching protestor with a megaphone, used to drown him out of the crowd]. I followed the hate/Bible-preaching protester with a book of my own, “Homosexuality & Civilization”, loudly reciting ancient poetry of man-boy love, homosexuality, Greek philosophy and biblical ignorance. Most people couldn’t hear this over the loud megaphone and assumed I was preaching the word of God. That’s what I get when people focus on a negative standpoint instead of trying to understand even those who they mistakenly think oppose them.
In the end, I was hoping to meet Mayor Adams at what was originally his celebration for coming into office…it was unfortunate that everyone’s desire to pick him apart for private matters had surfaced and prevented him from enjoying his own party. Maybe that’s for the best, he wouldn’t want another private affair to surface again this early in his term. =)

Both parties were of legal, consenting age when they chose to fool around.
No laws were broken.
Neither party alleges coercion or abuse of power.
Neither party alleges unwanted or forced attention.
This is only an issue for sexphobic idiots with a political ax to grind.
More power to Sam & Beau.

Why don’t people get out of his business? Politicians should be allowed to fuck whoever they want like the rest of us.

I agree with Jonny (and Jop too).
Willamette Week whipped up such intense scrutiny toward Sam that anything he could have said regarding Breedlove would have made some people angry. Digging so deeply for dirt on Sam–and then publishing all that speculation about the relationship–was out of line: it goaded him into lying. True, lying was a bad move, but Sam shouldn’t have been put in the position of having to comment on his sex life with the entire city breathing down his neck. Who he has sex with doesn’t change his excellent skills and his exciting plans for Portland. (When he spoke for a coming-out week event at my college, his most memorable line: ‘Go gay bikers!’)
Go gay mayors!

the fact that this guy apparently campaigned against predatory homos and denied it when the charges of the affair were brought up at the time, that i think he should resign for. but for the actual affair,it’s silly. the guy was 18 and legal when it became physical. and hey if i were 18 and this was the older man,i don’t think i would be a victim. the man is very attractive.

Heck, I’d love to bang a 40-something year-old, specially when you get to learn the crafts of politics from him. Two thumbs up for the pederastic mentor-protegé relationships.

I just ran an image search on Sam Adams, expecting to find something similar to the British MP’s… No such luck! He looks really quite handsome. There goes my plan to spend a good 5 minutes pondering over the young Beau being taken advantage of by a big fat (incredibly ugly) powerful man. Hmmm
michael added on January 30, 2009 :
With a name like Beau Breedlove, he could have an instant career in porn. I think he’s cute, but I probably wouldn’t glance at him twice in a crowd.
JMas added on January 30, 2009 :
I think hes hot but I do not think it is col for a middle aged guy to have sex with a young developing boy, however, it is a hot thought.
NelsonZee added on January 30, 2009 :
I thought exactly the same thing when I read the NY Times Op-Ed. I’m still pining for the Catholic Priest who became a mentor to me while I was an alter boy. Father Randall was hot and I knew what I was needing…
Foxxxy added on January 30, 2009 :
Yeah, Mr. Egan clearly didn’t have a sex life when he was 17 – oh well…
Robert added on January 30, 2009 :
I don’t know if this is homophobic, sexphobic or just today’s media soap opera. It seems like no one was hurt. If Mayor Adams does a good job for the city, that’s all that matters. Sounds like us BUTT readers got his back!
robert added on January 30, 2009 :
Yeah, the question is more who wouldn’t fuck Beau Breedlove? I mean let’s face it: when you meet a guy this HOT you don’t ask for ID, you don’t bother the dude with questions either, you just go down on your knees and you say Thank you Lord! Thank you!
Gareth added on January 30, 2009 :
Oh I hadn’t heard about it yet but I think it’s a lovely story. Shame it turned into a ’scandal’, it sounds like a lovely sweet love affair to me.
Jop added on January 30, 2009 :
I think Mr Egan’s response is ridiculous and unrealistic. I was dying to have sex with 30+ guys on the age of 14, the very idea of someone twice your age introducing you into sex is super exciting and not even not illegal in Europe where the age of consent is 14 (or is it 16 for gays?). And still I think age difference is a huge turn on and when you’re 17 or 18 you know exactly what you’re doing: experimenting.

the media in portland and abroad has made this such a big issue.
beau and sam met at a political dinner, beau was never an intern for sam or the city of portland, he was an intern for a republican in salem. beau and sam are still friends. if beau isn’t upset, beau’s parents aren’t upset, then who cares.. In the original article by the willamette week, most of the people that were interviewed were ex boyfriends of either beau or sam.. which seems uncredible to me.
well ofcourse people are upset because HE LIED, again who cares. he lied about his personal life at at time that someone was calling him a pedophile. who hasn’t lied about their sex life?
just a waist of time, sam has been doing amazing things for this city for 20 years, and this is what people are focusing on.
