CLUB BUTT Warehouse Party East London
Size does matter… And to celebrate BUTT magazine’s return to print, all homosexuals with an inclination to dance sashayed on down to CLUB BUTT’s high-capacity, 7,500 square foot warehouse in East London on Saturday, November 26, 2011. Every unputdownable homosexual within a five-mile radius came out of the woodwork for it. Who doesn’t like a big one?
CLUB BUTT 2012 Calendar Preview
BUTT is bringing back the printed weekly calendar for 2012, and London Buttheads were invited to a sneak preview Thursday, 22 September 2011 when CLUB BUTT — that is, BUTT’s nomadic club night which threatens to pop up at any second, then disappear again — reappeared at East London hot spot Bistrotheque for the very special occasion.
The 2012 calendar features twelve of the magazine’s top photographers who have shot forty-seven handsome studs over fifty-two weeks. Every flexing muscle, every erection, every gay gaze has been lovingly reproduced on BUTT’s trademark pink stock, and bound with superior workmanship. It has to be seen to be believed, really. A limited number of calendars was available at the venue, but you can still order the calendar in our online shop.
And just when you think it couldn’t get any more exciting, our favorite local deejay, Dave Kendrick, comes along to provide his special mix of jackin’ classics, always spiked with some mind-blowing track you’ve never heard. And Bistrotheque’s head honcho, David Waddington, has concocted an utterly marvelous pink drink special for you to get totally spritzt on.

CLUB BUTT GOES TO SÃO PAULO
On Friday, May 27th, CLUB BUTT popped up at Bar Volt for a party in conjunction with the PopPorn Festival. We were super excited to have DJ Gorky (from the Funk Carioca-influenced pop band Bonde do Rolê) and Gil Riquerme, who are amigos from way back, in charge of the music for this occasion. More about BUTT at the PopPorn Festival here.
CLUB BUTT HALLOWEEN IN NYC
Our CLUB BUTT Halloween party this weekend was such a massive success that the NYC crew all called in sick yesterday and stayed at home in bed nursing hangovers. Many of our guests also emailed us yesterday to say it was the best Halloween they’d had in years. One of the major reasons for the party’s success was Hiro Ballroom, gorgeously decorated with real trees and crinkling leaves strewn all over the dance floor. Since the space holds approximately 1500 people, our usual issues with ultra-long lines were also kept to a minimum. The party was packed with hot Buttheads in both classic and creative costumes – we saw lots of ghosts, vampires, and mummies, as well as a young man in an amazing copper costume which featured a headpiece with working video screen showing experimental videos he made. Andrew Butler of Hercules and Love Affair manned the decks in the early part of the evening, playing sexy disco rarities, and after his bandmate Kim Ann Foxman performed her solo single ‘Creature’ with a team of hot vogue dancers, DJ Honey Dijon took over DJing duties, playing house till the end of the night. Luckily we asked our After Hours photographer Jan Wandrag to capture all the costumes, dancing, cruising, and heavy petting on the dance floor. Check out our favorite shots above, and then on Friday a fuller selection will be added to Facebook so you can tag your little hearts out. Thanks again to everyone who made our Halloween night so wonderful!
BUTT MIXTAPE LISTENING PARTY IN SAN FRANCISCO IN AUGUST 2010
BUTT Magazine and the popular ‘queer DJ collective’ Honey Soundsystem threw a listening party in San Francisco on Sunday, August 29th, 2010 at Honey Sundays at the Paradise Lofts in celebration of a limited edition BUTT BIAS mixtape. Honey Soundsystem crafted an exclusive mix from a number of previously unreleased tracks, including many music-making homos featured in BUTT, as well as acts who have performed at previous BUTT parties. Some of these artists include Sissy Nobby, Microfilm, Matmos, Hidrogenesse, and Ssion. The party was fun with equal space for dancing and cruising. Drinks were cheap and the first 300 guests received a free cassette. A limited number of copies of the mixtape are still available after the party through Honey Soundsystem’s website.
BUTT PARTY PROVINCETOWN IN MASSACHUSETTS IN JULY 2010
On July 13, 2009, we threw a party during Bear Week in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a popular gay resort town on the tip of Cape Cod, to celebrate the launch of our new line of BUTT BEACH TOWELS, featuring five different men in our standard black and white and pink format. The party took place at the Governor Bradford, and was hosted by beach towel model Ernie Lijoi, publisher Michael Bullock, and Cesar Padilla, who DJ’d the party with Fag Bash’s Mark Louque. BUTT VALENTINE IN NYC IN FEBRUARY 2010
On February 14, 2010, BUTT friends gathered at Club Rush in New York City to celebrate the power of amore. The bash was co-hosted by Brazilian bombshell Lorenzo Martone and BUTT 28 cover boy Kele Okereke (of the band Bloc Party), and featured an ear-blasting performance by House of Ladosha. The DJs were Michael Magnan, Cesar Padilla, and editor Felix Burrichter. The first 50 guests received the new issue for free, and 288 bottles of Rush brand poppers were given out to aromatize the party. Guests who ventured to the back of the club had the indescribable pleasure of experiencing a full-body massage by the naked, horse-hung masseur Corey Corey (interviewed in BUTT 28). Amazing black and latino go-go boys with erections worked their asses off for the crowd. All images by Rosalie Knox. GAY PRIDE WEEKEND IN PALM SPRINGS IN NOVEMBER 2009
The BUTT crew traveled to Palm Springs, California the weekend of November 6th, 2009 to host a series of events to celebrate Gay Pride weekend and the launch of the BUTT-curated gay porn on-demand available exclusively at Ace Hotels in New York and Palm Springs. The lineup includes classic titles like Al Parker’s Inches and Matt Sterling’s The Bigger the Better, along with newer films like Homopunx and Bruce LaBruce’s Skin Gang.
The weekend got off to a bang Friday night with about 40 horny guys crammed into a hotel room eagerly awaiting the legendary porn director Joe Gage, who came to screen clips from his long career and answer questions about ‘the industry.’ Joe, still super sexy at 65, arrived at the event 15 minutes after wrapping production on his latest Titan Media film, The House Beyond Lover’s Lane. The crowd listened attentively as Joe talked about the making of the pioneering gay porn film Kansas City Trucking Company, why he regularly features women in his films, and where he draws the line when filming a father/son incest scene.
Saturday night, November 7th, a larger group gathered to watch the hilarious and incredibly hot porn classic A Night At the Adonis, starring the late, great Jack Wrangler. It was a terrific mix of people – some who’d never seen a vintage porno before, and some who’d actually been regular patrons of the Adonis, the Times Square gay porn theater where the film was set. Several men had their hands in each others laps and pants, while other, more modest men left early to go screw in their hotel rooms. Meanwhile outside, Disco Bloodbath author James St. James personally checked the pants of people who left to see if they had boners.
During the day on Saturday and Sunday we hosted two fabulous parties at the pool at the Ace, while photographer Gabe Ayala dragged boys into a nearby yurt – yes, a yurt- and took a series of delicious butt pictures. On Sunday afternoon, after performances from LA drag superstars Jer Ber Jones, Alaska Thunderfuck, and Phyllis Navidad, the Ace’s cultural engineer Jason Harler hosted a BUTT contest by the pool. The weekend also featured DJ sets from Honey Soundsystem, Girlfriends, the guys from Blow Pony, and an amazing performance by Seattle’s own Dina Martina.
SUPERGAY IN LONDON IN AUGUST 2009
On August 30th, 2009 BUTT threw SUPERGAY at Dalston Superstore to celebrate BUTT #27, The ‘Straight’ Issue. We invited 10 homosexualist deejays including über-special guests Justin Case and Open Mike of the Pet Shop Bears in Berlin, Macho City deejays Dave Kendrick, Paul Flynn and Charlie Porter, and the ever-amazing Dan Beaumont of Disco Bloodbath. Gays got in free, but heterosexuals had to pay a £5 cover, which in retropsect may have been a little odd, considering that the issue featured only straight people in it. Photos by Matthew Brindle. BUTT BANG! IN NYC IN JUNE 2009
BUTT wanted to do something very special as an alternative to the regular Gay Pride festivities in New York, so on June 19th, 2009 at The Knitting Factory in New York City, we threw BANG!, a pre-gay pride concert, featuring three amazing new acts featured in BUTT: goth-juke band Salem from Chicago, garage punk band Hunx and his Punx from San Francisco, and New Orleans bounce rappers Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia. Zachary Araki of Patent Leather Daddy DJ’d in between sets.
Opening band Hunx and his Punx warmed up the crowd with a short set singing their signature sugary queerpunk tunes. Lead singer Seth Bogart hopped out into the crowd to grope his eager fans. Next up were Salem with their unique brand of super dark and and moody Dilaudid-juke music, which they played under a disturbing collection of home video footage. But the crowd really went from zero to sixty when Sissy and Freedia came out to unleash their ass shaking movies and powerful beats. Despite a few early technical difficulties, the ladies won the crowd over in a matter of seconds, and showed an audience of people who had no idea who the ladies were or what was coming why this ass-shaking duo were the perfect pair to headline our first ever concert event. Billy Miller and Slava Mogutin shot great footage of their performances (click here and here), including the moment when random audience members were brought onstage to shake their butts for the crowd. We also had photographer Miguel Villalobos backstage, Mark Tusk in the audience, and Althea Smith taking crowd photos against an airbrushed backdrop in the bar area.
BUTT IN ASS IN NEW YORK CITY IN JULY 2009
In conjunction with BUTT’s alternative NY gay pride celebration BUTT BANG!, on June 22nd, 2009, the BUTT Magazine curated exhibition BUTT IN ASS opened at Asia Song Society (A.S.S.) gallery on New York’s Lower East Side, where it ran through July 11th. For this show the gallery was transformed into a mock porn shop, complete with a three unit video-buddy-booth sculpture by Shawn Maximo screening queer video art in lieu of porn. Curated by Michael Bullock (U.S. publisher of BUTT) and Yasmine Dubois-Ziai, BUTT IN ASS went with our tradition of showcasing the artistic gamut from established luminaries to emerging talents and also aimed to bring attention to the NYPD’s unjust practice of entrapping gay and bisexual men in sex shops and charging them with prostitution. Guests were invited to both enjoy the video art and also use the booths for their originally intended purpose, creating a safe space for public cruising. Many took advantage of this feature, and we had a great mix of art enthusiasts and horny men coming in and out during the evening hours.
The show featured videos by: Kathryn Garcia, Paul Pfeiffer, Ely Kim, Jean Genet, Paul Lee, Wayne Yung, Kalup Linzy, Slava Mogutin & Brian Kenny, Chris Moukarbel, Julika Rudelius, Shahryar Nashat, Lovett/Codagnone, Nayland Blake, Stewart Marshall and Isaac Julien. (Click here to see video of the show) The installation space was complemented by Michael Magnan’s mock-gay porn DVD cases (viewable here) which came with an exclusive BUTT Mix CD created by Magnan as well. The show also featured the work of Chiang Fu, Desi Santiago, and Shawn Maximo. Naturally we had festive and frisky opening and closing night parties.
As a special treat to continue the BUTT Pride festivities we also held a program of secret performances titled DARKROOM. These events were held on June 23rd, 25th, and 26th at midnight in the basement of the ASS gallery. Forty guests were selected at random from BUTT blog readers, but attendees were not told what the performances would be.
Lucky attendees on the first night were surprised to learn that they would be watching actor James Franco’s first student film The Feast of Stephen, an extraordinarily homosexual film about an adolescent fantasizing about a group of basketball playing peers. The film was based on the work of gay poet Anthony Hecht, and Franco showed up to introduce the film. Other nights featured an performance by the band Salem, who had played at BUTT BANG! the previous week. Another evening featured elaborate performance by artist Desi Santiago titled, ‘Work for Love’, which involved two dancers covered in black body paint, a giant balloon that expanded to fill the tiny basement space, and Ladyfag lip-synching to First Choice’s classic disco tune ‘Dr. Love.’ To see video of this performance, click here.
BUTT IN ASS was made possible by the generous support of American Apparel, a long time friend and supporter of the gay community.
BIENNIAL PARTY IN VENICE IN JULY 2009
On June 5, 2009, BUTT threw an art sleaze party with adidas originals and Josh Wood at Piccolo Mondo in Venice to celebrate LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA, the 53rd International Art Exhibition in the city. The party was great, but many BUTT friends were upset that they didn’t get in because the place was tiny and packed in about 20 minutes. Still, for those who made it in, Italo disco-spinning DJ duo Discodromo was great and the local singing sensation Hard Ton was nothing less than sensational – something between Sylvester and Divine, but in black leather. He did half a dozen songs, including Madonna’s universally dreaded but in Hard Ton’s version very fabulous ‘Hung Up’.
BUTT OFFICE HOLIDAY PARTY IN NYC IN NOVEMBER 2008
BUTT’s annual Holiday Party on 12.11.08 at our office on Chrystie Street in New York’s Lower East Side. Drinks and mistletoe brought the crowd who spilled out into the hallway. Guests included photographer Paul Mpagi-Sepuya, artist Terence Koh, and future BUTT After Hours subject Pete, whose tattooed posterior can be seen above. Photographs by Adam Baran.
BUTT BEER BUST 3 IN LONDON IN SEPTEMBER 2008
BUTT BEER BUST 1 IN LONDON IN JULY 2008
In the summer of 2008, Bistrotheque & BUTT presented the first in a series of 3 summer beer-a-thons: the BUTT-BEER-BUST. Punters were invited to buy their own mug and drink as much beer as they possible could while getting stuffed with 8-inch sausages from the grill. Alex Needham, Trolls-Royce and Jon Death played beer-chugging party anthems, and our favorite singer-songwriter, Sander Plug, performed some sweet, homo love songs… unplugged. On the flyer, it’s Pete who was shot by Devin Blair.
BUTT FILM SCREENING IN LONDON IN OCTOBER 2006
To mark the release of the BUTT BOOK, the Taschen publication which celebrated the best of the first five years of BUTT, Tate Modern curator and friend of BUTT Stuart Comer curated an amazing screening featuring films and videos by contributors to the magazine and material inspired by the community it created. The 80 minute program occurred on Saturday, October 7th, 2006 at 7PM. Films shown included an excerpt from Shirley Jackson’s Portrait of Jason, William E. Jones’ Mansfield 1962, found footage of NYC drag balls and clubs selected by assume vivid astro focus, The Hidden Cameras’ Golden Streams music video, General Idea’s Shut the Fuck Up (pictured above), an excerpt from David Wojnarowicz’s ITSOFOMO, work by regular BUTT photographers Wolfgang Tillmans and Walter Pfeiffer, and a clip from a porn video called Foreskin Forever found in the trash by the editor of BUTT’s boyfriend. The same program was shown later that year at MIX NYC, New York’s Queer Experimental Film Festival.
