Chez Maman

A stone’s throw away from Manneken Pis, Chez Maman is a great place to grab a drink or meet friends before going somewhere else for the night. After ringing the bell of a nondescript looking entry, a doorman will let you in and lead you upstairs to a relaxed and slightly stuffy bar that looks like the kind of men’s club you’d imagine Jean Genet would have frequented. Most people seem to know each other and there is a friendly and familial vibe with people offering to buy you drinks or taking your jacket. Part of the nightly ritual is a performance by an old school drag queen who will belt out some French varieté tune by the likes of Edith Piaf.
