Hi! I’m Frank and it’s time to update the L.A. Fag Map. I’ve lived in ‘The Lady’ for 23 years now. I’m an art director working in advertising and graphic design and I also write about art for Artillery Magazine. I’m originally from a small town in Illinois so I’m used to driving everywhere and having to dig to find alternative experiences, which is why this city is a good fit for me. LA doesn’t reveal itself right away. It requires some foreplay before it gives up the goods. Whatever you’re interested in is here in this sprawling multicultural megalopolis, you just have to do the legwork.

Went to North Hollywood Spa and had some fun. Does that count as “LA”? The great experience came from the cool guy I met there.

Hurray for you Paul. My fagmap covers the gay “southland” and Noho is indeed part of that. I’m glad you met a cool guy and had some wet fun.

Time for another great Spotlight party downtown, this time on Saturday Sept 13. RSVP at spotlightparty.com for details and location.

Don’t worry Bathhouse Bettys, Mrs. Flex has finally reopened her doors. Now you can swim and cruise and soak in Silverlake’s only bathhouse and maybe even blow off the dust on their weight machines to get a little workout in. See the list above for info.

Hello Frank, my boyfriend and I will be passing through LA in October for two nights. Could you or anyone else please suggest an inexpensive but nice hotel/b&b in the Silverlake or West Hollywood area? Close to interesting cafes, bars, markets, etc

FRANK RODRIGUEZ  ·  1 month ago

i suggest you check out craigslist or air b&b to find a good place right in the middle of one of the neighborhoods. In Silverlake, I know of a couple places you can rent. Message me.

Flex Baths closed at least temporarily. The rumor is that a tweaker was having issues and staff put him in a booth to chill and they found him in the morning dead. Then LA city fathers said “enough” and pulled the plug. Who knows if that is true. But you’ll need to go to Midtown Spa or KLYT (downtown), Roman Holiday (locations in West LA and the Valley) if you want some LA bathhouse action.

spotlightparty.com, the essential occasional downtown party that’s been kicking around for more than a year. buttheads, you will love this combo of underground DTLA edge, forward music, sex vibe and cool crowd. Next one is June 7th!

I need to update the Fagmap soon but wanted everyone to know that MJs Bar in gentrified, family-fried Silverlake is now closed and middle-eatern hot spot Club Nur is moving to Here in West Hollywood. Later this Spring/Summer, Big Gay Ice Cream (from NYC) is opening downtown followed by a big gay bar called Precinct in a historic building not far from the new DTLA Ace Hotel on Broadway. Just like in the mid 20th Century, Downtown LA is once again alive with gay life.

You should add the Slammer to the fag mag. It’s my favorite place to go for kinky nasty sex. Great dark room action, slings for fucking in, and plenty of dirty-minded guys. http://www.slammerclub.com/c11/LOCATION%20&%20MAP.htm

Thanks for the comment Ben. I’ve only been twice eons ago and both times it reeked of Crystal Carrington and pop-eyed tweaker bottom boys who couldn’t get hard, not that there is anything wrong with that. I will be openminded and check it out again sometime soon, hopefully it’s less Breaking Bad than before.

I’ve heard rumors of a hush hush downtown man/man cantina in the back of a mexican seafood restaurant on Broadway. Can you confirm?

      • Profile picture
FRANK RODRIGUEZ  ·  11 months ago

i haven’t heard about this but please go check it out and report back what you find. Who doesn’t love man/man cantina action after some ceviche? And while you’re downtown, go to LA’s oldest bathhouse, the KLYT club, for some DL steam action with latin guys who don’t use apps. I made it out of there without getting crabs or scabies.

Plan on Akbar and Fubar for starters and check LA Weekly or Frontiers for special events happening or send me a note when you are here and I’ll do my best to tell you what’s going on.

Can anyone suggest a few hotels in LA?

      • Profile picture
FRANK RODRIGUEZ  ·  1 year ago

Hey Mark, it all depends on what area you want/need to be in. An alternative to hotels are rental apartments in cool neighborhoods like Silver Lake and Echo Park or Highland Park. Message me with where you want to be and price range and I’ll see if I can offer advice.

Will be there in less than a week.

I’ve been to LA numerous times before but surprisingly the only place on the Fag Map I have been is MJ’s (I have a serious weakness for Middle Eastern guys).

I have a lot of ‘legwork’ to do. Indeed! ;)

You know there are places in the Valley too- like the Bullet on Burbank Ave. If you are at Universal, Disney, or Warner Brothers in Burbank/the Valley and want to grab a drink after a meeting in a leather bar, the Valley has some too. Not everything in LA is over the hill.

      • Profile picture
FRANK RODRIGUEZ  ·  1 year ago

The Bullet is fun. I like Fridays Oso (“Bears” en espanol) night there (with DJ Howie) for latin bears and their fans and pals! Also, try the Boulevard in Pasadena and Oil Can Harry’s in Studio City for their Saturday night old skool disco dance nights.

At the risk of being deemed gay old skool, i have to recommend Outfest’s screening of “Johnny Guitar” on May 23 at the Downtown Independant. Nic Ray’s 1954′s classic will kick your ass by subverting the Western genre and traditional gender roles and it’s a full-on blast. Seriously. The film is NOT on DVD or netflix so don’t miss this rare screening. Oh, and Joan Crawford is in it.

Had delicious Burmese food last night at Yoma Myanmar, 713 E. Garvey Ave, Monterey Park, CA 91755 just 10 minutes east of downtown. Make sure to try the tea leaf salad if you’ve never had Burmese food before! The place is not fancy but the food is amazing and very inexpensive. A welcome break from Thai and Indian food!

hmmmmm. can I please do a fag map. interesting choices. I do take it personal when you say the folks at TACOS DELTA didnt give you a napkin, i find that very hard to believe. I wrote a story for the Los Angeles seeking out the best Mexican Breakfast in LA and Tacos Delta took the cake. Not only is it the best Mexican homestyle food in Silver Lake the owners are and their family are some of the most humble, hardworking and nicest people on the planet. Not to mention, their son is an the military and continues to serve in the middle east. The 101 and The Baazar interesting choices.

FRANK RODRIGUEZ  ·  2 years ago

Hey Leelo, I always enjoyed the food at Tacos Delta and I’m sure the napkin incident was an exception and not the rule. I put the 101 on my list because I’ve never had this dessert anywhere else and it’s pretty remarkable. Bazaar is dinner as theater and as douchey and sceney as it is, it is as specific to the LA experience as Sapp or El Taurino. Let’s go eat and chat sometime.

Faultline is mentioned in the Gran Burrito listing and The Eagle is on the list above. I love Tiki Ti but it’s not officially gay enough for the Butt listing. But it’s great! The bar at El Chavo is fun too.

Tonight (10/31/11) is the last night of Le Barcito which has been a gay bar since the ’60s and is the west coast birthplace of gay activism. It will be come a hipster restaurant to serve the quickly gentrifying neighborhood. Another gay bar bites the dust. Put down your Scruff and support your gay bars or they will disappear forever. RIP Le Barcito/aka Black Cat.

Poquito Mas is fine but aimed at a gringo pallete. You can go on chowhound to read hundreds of posts about the best taco/burrito in LA but King Taco (a small, local chain), El Taurino or the taco trucks between Fountain and Santa Monica on Western are all rock solid. .
